“A Course in Miracles” is a spiritual and also philosophical text that was conceived by Helen Schucman and published in 1976. Like the Christian version of the Bhagavad Gita.
Helen Schucman heard a voice inside her mind which urged her to start writing what she heard. She herself called it a kind of dicatation. The dicatation appears to be a dictation by Christ to Schucman through a process of inner dictation that lasted for seven years.
Who was Helen Schucman?
Helen Schucman was a professor of medical psychology at Columbia University when she began experiencing a series of unusual and unsettling visions. She eventually confided in her colleague and friend, William Thetford, who suggested that they work together to document the visions and try to understand their meaning. Over the next seven years, Schucman transcribed the teachings she received from Jesus, while Thetford provided editorial support and guidance.
The teachings of “A Course in Miracles” are based on the principles of love, forgiveness, and the attainment of inner peace. The book presents a metaphysical system that suggests that our reality is an illusion created by our own thoughts and beliefs, and that the ultimate goal of spiritual practice is to awaken to the truth of our own divine nature.
Despite its popularity and influence, the teachings of “A Course in Miracles” have also been the subject of controversy and debate. Some critics have questioned the authenticity of the teachings, while others have criticized the book’s approach to spirituality as being overly intellectual and divorced from the practical realities of everyday life.
Regardless of these criticisms, “A Course in Miracles” has had a profound impact on the spiritual lives of many people around the world. Its teachings continue to inspire and challenge readers to seek deeper levels of understanding and connection with the divine.
How was A Course in Miracles Conceived?
William Thetford, her colleague and later her moral support, is kindly sharing his memory about Helen Shucman and her struggles with being the scribe of such important scriptures, the conception of ACIM – A Course in Miracles. He further shares how after many important events, Helen Schucman began receiving the dictation.
She did not feel comfortable with hearing the voice in her mind, but at the same time she did not dare to disobey. The dictation began with: “This is Course in Miracles. Please take notes.”
Often she would not agree with what she heard giving her extreme anxiety and she would refuse to continue taking the words down on paper. Eventually she would give in to the voice and continue with the dictation wherever she had stopped. She told William, that as much as it was her job to be the scribe, as much it was his job to correct and to make sure the volumes made sense.
Nothing real can be threatened.
Nothing unreal exists.
Herein lies the Peace of God.

Book about Helen Schucman
This book written by Kenneth Wapnick, “Absence from Felicity,” is a biography about Helen Schucman, the scribe of “A Course in Miracles,” which was dictated by Jesus. The focus of the book is on the lifelong conflict between Schucman’s spiritual nature and her ego, and how this conflict affected her writing of the Course.
The author includes extensive excerpts from Schucman’s own recollections, personal messages from Jesus, dreams, and letters that have never been published before. Additionally, the book contains some of the personal instructional material from Jesus that was an integral part of the original dictation of the Course but was later removed as directed by Jesus.
The biography explores the process of the Course’s scribing, Schucman’s personal experiences with Jesus, and her relationship with William Thetford, her friend and colleague at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City, who collaborated with her in the writing of the Course.
The last section of the book includes reminiscences of Schucman by Kenneth Wapnick, the author, who had an intimate relationship with the scribe during the last eight years of her life. The book concludes with a discussion of Jesus and the appearance and reality of our relationship with him, viewed through the lens of Schucman’s experiences.
Overall, “Absence from Felicity” provides a fascinating look at Schucman’s life and the circumstances that led to the writing of “A Course in Miracles.” The book’s extensive use of Schucman’s own words and personal material from Jesus provides a unique and insightful perspective on her experiences. Wapnick’s reminiscences add a personal touch and deepen the reader’s understanding of Schucman as a person. Finally, the book’s discussion of Jesus and our relationship with him in the context of Schucman’s experiences offers thought-provoking insights into spirituality and faith.
