“Words are symbols of symbols and therefore twice removed from reality.” This sentence from a Course in Miracles has intrigued me for years until I finally really understood what it meant. And now that I do it is so powerful.
The Role of Words in Healing
The chapter 21 of the Manual for Teachers is the section where the two phrases appear in A Course in Miracles. The talk is about healing.
A Course in Miracles – Manual for Teachers
21. What Is the Role of Words in Healing?
M-21.1. Strictly speaking, words play no part at all in healing. 2 The motivating factor is prayer, or asking. 3 What you ask for you receive. 4 But this refers to the prayer of the heart, not to the words you use in praying. 5 Sometimes the words and the prayer are contradictory; sometimes they agree. 6 It does not matter. 7 God does not understand words, for they were made by separated minds to keep them in the illusion of separation. 8 Words can be helpful, particularly for the beginner, in helping concentration and facilitating the exclusion, or at least the control, of extraneous thoughts. 9 Let us not forget, however, that words are but symbols of symbols. 10 They are thus twice removed from reality. Words are Symbols – That’s all!
Words are just parts or symbols of our communication between each other. Most of the conflicts which end up in discussions, quarrels, anger and even wars stem from the misunderstanding of the words we choose in our dialogue.
When we talk with each other, in an ideal situation we always communicate on several different levels with each other, not just merely through words, but also with our emotional and spiritual levels of our self. When we are in tune with each other the likeliness for misunderstandings and conflict is strongly reduced, almost gone.
We have each assigned a meaning to each word we use. And it is the meaning which each persons assigns to each word which might not coincide with each other. This might create confusion between people, and therefore conflict and discussions.
Each Word stands for a Meaning
So in this context each word we use in our language is standing for a meaning. It is a symbol of that meaning.
But behind the meaning there is a will or need to communicate something, a need to connect. Observing the meaning behind the word we notice that it too now is simply a symbol of the underlying need to communicate or connect. To be able to translate the need to communicate, one has to translate that need into an intellectual meaning. And that meaning has to be now translated into a word.
Therefore, in this context, a word is a symbol, i.e. the meaning, of a symbol, i.e. the underlying emotions or need to communicate to one another.
How to avoid bad communication?
People who are in tune with their emotional intelligence and their Higher Self, are usually able to choose the right words and tone of voice which are able to connect with the person they in front of them.
Let’s do these three things to avoid confusion and with it discussions:
- Tune into the best version of your self when talking to someone.
Envelop yourself and the person infront of you into a white loving light. That decision of yours to be the best version of your self by tuning into heart center most people will pick up instantly and will be drawn to you on the spot and willing to cooperate and share with you.
- Allow the words to arise from your heart center.
Choose your words with care. Your ego resides in your head and is ready to correct and seperate at all times. It you turn your attention towards the heart you will choose your words wisely.
- Don’t react to negative words from the other
You probably are not getting the meaning of what the person is trying to communicate to you. Ask what they mean with the words they use if you are unsure. Your interpretation might be completely wrong.
